In a move that was seen as a bit shocking by some (not many), and as a no-brainer by others, the New Jersey Devils announced today that Zach Parise has been named captain.
Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk will wear the A’s.
Zach Parise was a RFA this off-season, and signed a one-year deal for $6MM on July 29th, just a few days prior to his arbitration hearing.
While some thought naming a player on a one year deal might not be a good idea, most others thought doing so would be a sign that the team is committed to keeping him around for a long time.
The team has cleared plenty of cap space to get a deal done with Parise. While negotiations can continue, a new deal can’t be announced until the new year.
Parise is entering his seventh season with the Devils. He played in only 12 games last season after suffering a knee injury. He returned for one game on April 2nd before being shut down for the remained of the season. He had played in at least 81 games in every season before last.
Parise has 163 goals and 341 points in 420 career games, all with the Devils.
