He was the guy most Devils fans wanted, but he was also the guy few thought the team could get.

After hearing that Colorado had traded away John-Michael Liles, my hopes of Adam Larsson falling to the fourth pick were pretty much gone.

But that’s the beauty of the NHL Draft… You just never know what will happen.

As I sat and watched the Draft outside the Prudential Center with about 5,000 other Devils fans, the draft began and the projected number one pick, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, went first to Edmonton.

Colorado was up next, and a few of us discussed who the Devils might select – Jonathan Huberdeau, Gabriel Landeskog,  Dougie Hamilton – everyone except Larsson.

When Colorado announced their pick, Landeskog, a cheer when up from the crowd.

The next few minutes seemed to take forever as everyone waited for the Panthers pick. The only team standing between the Devils and the defenseman they desperately needed… and most wanted.

As Florida’s pick was announced – Huberdeau – the crowd cheered once again, and a loud “We Want Larsson!” chant immediately began.

And as we know, the Devils selected the guy most of us wanted.
