Special Plans for the Upcoming Winter Classic Game
The upcoming Winter Classic game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings will have something really special for the fans.
On top of the Leafs vs Wings game there will be two alumni games featuring close to 50 players from each of the storied franchises.
Wendel Clark, who will suit up for the Leafs in one of the Alumni games reflected on just how special the games will be.
He said that both of the teams have been around from the beginning of professional hockey and having the additional alumni games allows more players to join in on the fun.
Preliminary rosters for both teams were announced last Wednesday at Comercia Park, where the alumni games are set to take place on December 31, 2012.
The 2012-13 editions of the Red Wings and Maple Leafs will play the Winter Classic on January 1, 2013 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Chris Chelios and Larry Murphy are expected to make appearances for the Red Wings at the alumni games, along with Mickey Redmond, John Ogrodnick, Luc Robitaille, Dino Ciccarelli, Mark Howe, Chris Osgood, Mike Vernon and Alex Delvecchio.
The Red Wings famous Grind Line will almost be fully intact again, as Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, Darren McCarty and Joe Kocur are expected to take part.
The Leafs lineup at the Alumni game also looks pretty special.
Clark, Darryl Sittler and Doug Gilmour are expected to skate for the Leafs.
More players will need to be added as the event nears. Hopefully stars like Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov and Niklas Lidstrom will also take part.
